Pisgah River Rangers - Lead River Ranger

Description and Duties:

The Pisgah River Rangers is an outreach and education program designed to promote and protect the ecological health of Pisgah National Forest’s natural resources. This program focuses on environmental stewardship and public education & outreach focused on stream health. The Lead River Ranger will be employed through The Pisgah Conservancy. The position is apartnership with the U.S. Forest Service, The Pisgah Conservancy, Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the Public Land Corps. This position is based out of the US Forest ServicePisgah Ranger Station in Pisgah Forest, NC.

As a Lead River Ranger, most work will be outdoors. Duties include creating and managing River Ranger intern schedules, providing outreach to the public in Pisgah National Forest through educational programs (guided hikes, riverside programs, etc), and collaborating with partners and USFS staff to support other outreach projects/events. Other regular duties include litter pick-up, rock dam/cairn removal, conducting angler/creel surveys, and managing the River Ranger Facebook page. There will be opportunity for the Lead to create and implement new education programs. There will be some opportunity during the summer to assist in biological monitoring of natural resources (snorkel surveys for hellbenders, electrofishing for brook trout, etc).

● Familiarity with Southern Appalachian ecosystems
● Experience wading, swimming, or snorkeling in rivers
● Experience with social media and graphic design
● Experience with biological surveys & knowledge of biological sciences
● CPR/First Aid certified

 

Job Requirements:

Degree in Natural Resources Management, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be comfortable wading and potentially swimming in streams of various depths. Must be comfortable working outdoors in hot and buggy conditions. Must be comfortable communicating with the public and supervising crew (up to 3 River Ranger interns). Valid driver’s license is required.

Duration of Work & Compensation:

March 2025 - August 2025. The position is funded for at least 640 hours. Lead River Ranger has opportunity to work part-time before the official season starts but is expected to work in a full-time capacity (40 hours/week) from May to early August. Start and end dates are flexible. 

$20/hour, not to exceed 40 hours per week, with some weekends and holidays required. Housing is not provided.
